What does the Genuine Student requirement mean for my Australian student visa, and how is it different from the old GTE?
The Genuine Student requirement replaced the old GTE for all Australian student visa applications lodged on or after the 23 March changeover date. It explicitly allows future PR pathways, weighs how the course links to your career, and is answered inside the online application form. Check the official immigration page.
The Genuine Student, or GS, requirement replaced GTE for applications lodged on or after the 23 March changeover date, so many guides online are outdated. Applications lodged before that date are still assessed under the old GTE criteria.
GTE Compared With GS
| Point | Old GTE | Genuine Student |
|---|---|---|
| Applies to | Applications lodged before the 23 March changeover date | Applications lodged on or after the 23 March changeover date |
| Intent focus | Leaned heavily on proving temporary intent | Allows future PR pathways without counting against you |
| Career link | Less emphasis | More weight on how the course connects to your future career |
| Where you answer | A separate attached statement | Directly in the online application form |
How the GS Answers Work
- Each response has a 150-word limit and must be written in English.
- Questions cover your current circumstances, why you chose the course and provider, how the course benefits you, and any study history in Australia.
- There is an additional question if you have previously held a student visa or are applying from within Australia on a different visa.
- Evidence such as transcripts, employment letters or income proof carries more weight than the statement alone.
My Advice
Write each answer specifically about your course and your career plan, and keep supporting documents ready to back every claim. Confirm the exact rules on the official Australian immigration page before you lodge.
