What are the work visa options after completing my degree in the UK or Australia for a PhD?
UK PhD graduates receive a 3-year Graduate Route visa with unrestricted work rights and no employer sponsorship required. Australian PhD graduates get up to 4 years on the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) with an age limit of 50 years - compared to the 35-year age limit that applies to Bachelor's and taught Master's graduates. Both visas allow work for any employer without a job offer in hand.
PhD graduates benefit from significantly more generous post-study work rights than Master's or Bachelor's graduates in both the UK and Australia. The extended visa durations and relaxed age limits reflect both countries' recognition of doctoral-level research contributions. Here is everything you need to know before choosing your PhD destination.

My Advice
For Indian PhD graduates, Australia offers a significantly better post-study work deal than the UK from January 2027 onward - 4 years vs 3 years, with the Australian visa also keeping the age limit at 50. If your PhD research area is in demand in Australia (healthcare, engineering, STEM, education), the 4-year Subclass 485 gives you ample time to transition from the graduate visa to a permanent residency pathway such as the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS 186) or the Skilled Independent Visa (189). In the UK, use the 3-year Graduate Route to establish yourself and then transition to the Skilled Worker Visa when you have a sponsoring employer lined up.
