What are the upcoming changes to post-study work visas, financial requirements, and English proficiency standards for Indian students applying to the UK?

The single most consequential date in these changes is not your course start date but the date you apply for the Graduate visa, since applying by 31 December 2026 versus from 1 January 2027 is the difference between 2 years and 18 months of post study work.

Graduate Visa Duration Change

• Apply by 31 December 2026: eligible master's or bachelor's graduates get 2 years on the Graduate visa.
• Apply from 1 January 2027: the Graduate visa becomes 18 months for the same graduates.
• PhD graduates: retain 3 years regardless of the application date.

Rising Financial Requirements

For the 2026 to 2027 academic year, the Student visa maintenance requirement increases from £1,529 to £1,570 a month in London, and from £1,171 to £1,203 a month outside London, each required for up to 9 months. That puts the maximum living cost evidence at £14,130 in London or £10,827 outside it. Funds generally need to be held for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of your application, and India is not currently on the list of nationalities exempt from providing this evidence.

Tighter English Language Standards

For a UK degree level Student visa, the required standard is now CEFR B2, while below degree level study still requires B1. Universities can assess English equivalence themselves for degree level study, or you can rely on an approved SELT test score, and if your prior degree was taught in English outside the UK, Ecctis may need to confirm the qualification and language of instruction. A related change affects the Skilled Worker route many Graduate visa holders move into afterward, which now requires B2 English in cases where the updated standard applies, up from the previous B1.

My Advice

If you can realistically start your course in time to apply for the Graduate visa before 31 December 2026, that alone is worth prioritising over a slightly cheaper or more convenient later intake, since it is worth an extra six months of UK work rights. Get your English test booked early and aim comfortably above the B2 floor, since universities increasingly use it as a genuine admissions filter rather than a formality, especially now that Skilled Worker sponsors also expect B2 for many roles.
