What are the basic requirements to pursue a PhD abroad, specifically in the UK?

The Core Requirements

• Academic background: typically a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, often plus a Master's, with many universities expecting the equivalent of a UK 2:1 degree or above.
• Research proposal: for self designed projects, you need to explain your research question, why it matters, the existing literature gap, and your proposed method, though advertised projects may already define the question for you.
• A willing supervisor: identifying an academic whose published work matches your proposed topic and confirming they are accepting students is particularly important in the UK system, more so than in some other countries.
• English proficiency: commonly IELTS Academic or an equivalent approved test, with UK immigration generally requiring English equivalent to CEFR B2 for degree level study.
• References and funding: 2 to 3 academic references who can speak to your research potential, plus a funding plan, since UKRI funded studentships can cover tuition, a stipend, and research costs but are usually applied for through the university rather than directly.

Getting the Visa Once You Have an Offer

Once accepted, you need a Student visa, for which your university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. Depending on your research area and nationality, certain sensitive STEM or research subjects also require an ATAS certificate before the visa can be granted, so check this early if your field touches areas like advanced materials, nuclear technology, or certain engineering disciplines.

My Advice
