Should I learn some Italian before studying in Italy as an Indian student, and how much?

There is no single level every student needs, and it depends on your goals. For an English-taught degree, basic conversational Italian is enough. Aim for around A2 in your first semester, and meet the university's required level if your programme is taught in Italian.

Your target depends on your goals, so there is no single level that suits every student. If your degree is English-taught, basic conversational Italian is typically enough to start with.

Why Some Italian Still Matters

  • An English-taught programme covers lectures and exams, but not your permesso appointment at the Questura, your rental contract or a doctor's visit.
  • Most part-time jobs also need some Italian.
  • Students who arrive with zero Italian often end up stressed, overpaying or relying on others for basic tasks.

My Advice

You do not need fluency. Start a course before you fly, aim for A2 in your first semester, take the free Italian classes your university offers, and practise in everyday situations. Most students find the language barrier eases by the second semester.
