Is there a standard word limit I should follow for my SOP when applying to Canadian universities?

If a Canadian university has not given its own guideline, the commonly cited SOP word limit is 1000 to 1200 words. You should also aim to keep it to about two pages in a Word document.

How to Use This

  • Check the university's guidelines first, since a stated limit overrides the general figure.
  • Plan your content so that it fits within the page limit without crowding the text.
  • Keep each paragraph focused on your goals and your fit for the course.

My Advice

Write the first draft freely, then cut it down to fit the limit. Limits differ by university and course, so check the official application page before you finalize your SOP.
