Is there a limit on how many times I can retake the TOEFL?
There is typically no limit on how many times you can take the TOEFL. However, you cannot take it more than once within a three-day period, and this also applies if you cancelled the scores from an earlier test. Check the official ETS page for the latest rule.
You can usually retake the TOEFL as many times as you need, because there is no limit on attempts. The one restriction is a gap of three days between test appointments.
TOEFL Retake Rules
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Number of attempts | No limit on how many times you can take the test |
| Gap between tests | Not more than once within a three-day period |
| After cancelling scores | The same three-day rule still applies |
| Existing appointment | You cannot register for another date falling within three days of it |
Planning a Retake
If you are not satisfied with your score, you can test again as long as you respect the gap between appointments. Policies can change, so check the official ETS website before you book.
My Advice
Use the gap between attempts to work on your weak sections instead of rebooking immediately. Also check whether your target universities have rules on which scores they accept.
