Is the dMAT for German university admissions a general aptitude test, or does it test subject specific knowledge?
The dMAT tests both general aptitude and subject application rather than just one. Its Core Module measures logic and pattern recognition over ninety minutes, while its Subject Module presents field specific scenarios from your bachelor's background, checking how you apply concepts instead of recalling memorised facts.
Think of the dMAT as two exams in one sitting. The first half checks your raw reasoning ability, and the second half checks how well you apply your own bachelor's subject to unfamiliar problems, so memorised facts alone will not carry you through.
The Two Modules At A Glance
| Module | Duration | What It Tests |
|---|---|---|
| Core Module | 90 minutes | Logic, data analysis, pattern recognition |
| Subject Module | 90 minutes | Applying your bachelor's field to new scenarios |
Exam Format Notes
- The full exam runs about three and a half hours including a scheduled break.
- It is fully digital and taken at official test centres, with no rough paper or note taking allowed.
- Your certificate is required to complete APS verification for the affected fields from the Summer 2027 intake.
My Advice
Split your prep time evenly between the two modules instead of over practicing one. Review your own bachelor's fundamentals for the Subject Module, and spend equal hours drilling timed logic puzzles for the Core Module.
