Is PTE easier than IELTS for a UK student visa application?

Many students find PTE easier than IELTS, but this depends on your strengths. PTE is fully computer-based with AI scoring - removing the stress of a human examiner in Speaking. Results come in 2-5 days. Both are equally valid for UK student visas when you take the UKVI-designated version.

Many students find PTE easier than IELTS, but whether it is easier for you personally depends on your strengths. PTE is fully computer-based with AI scoring and no human examiner, which many Indian students prefer because it removes the subjectivity of a human rater in the Speaking component. Results come within 2-5 business days, much faster than IELTS. Both tests are accepted for UK student visas when you take the UKVI-designated version.

My Advice

My honest take: PTE is not objectively easier - the language proficiency required is the same, but the test format rewards different skills than IELTS. Students who struggle with the IELTS Speaking component in particular often do significantly better with PTE, simply because recording your response into a computer removes the anxiety of performing in front of an examiner. The AI scoring also means there is less variance in Speaking marks. If you have tried IELTS twice and keep falling short in Speaking or Writing, try a full PTE mock test before deciding which to pursue. For UK visa purposes, both are equally valid once you take the UKVI-designated version. One important note: Oxford and Cambridge do not accept PTE - if those are your targets, IELTS is mandatory.
