Is NEET compulsory for me to study MBBS in the UK?

You do not need NEET if you only plan to study MBBS and practise in the UK, but you still need UCAT. If you may return to India, qualify NEET-UG before you leave, or the NMC will consider your degree invalid for FMGE or NeXT licensing.

It depends on where you want to practise. If you only want to study MBBS and settle and practise medicine in the UK, you do not need NEET, though you will need to qualify for the UCAT.

NEET by Career Plan

Your planNEET needed?
Study and practise medicine in the UK onlyNo, but UCAT is required
Return to India and practise medicineYes, qualify NEET-UG before you leave India

Why NEET Matters for India

  • You do not need a high rank, only the basic cut-off marks for your category (General, OBC, SC or ST) for that year.
  • If you study MBBS abroad without qualifying NEET, the NMC will consider your degree invalid.
  • You would then not be allowed to sit the licensing exams (FMGE or NeXT) or practise medicine in India.

My Advice

If there is any chance you will come back to India, qualify NEET-UG first, because it keeps your options open. Check the latest NMC rules on the official website before you decide.
