If I want to take my spouse with me to the UK, what is the process or eligibility for a Master's/Postgraduate?
You can only bring your spouse to the UK on a standard taught Master's if you switch to a PhD, a research-based Master's of 9 months or longer, or a sponsored course over 6 months. You will also need extra funds, around 680 to 845 pounds monthly for your spouse.
Whether your spouse can join you in the UK depends entirely on the type of Master's you are enrolled in, not simply on being married. A standard taught MA, MSc or MBA does not qualify your spouse for a dependant visa under current rules.
Which Programs Let You Bring a Spouse
| Program Type | Spouse Eligible for Dependant Visa |
|---|---|
| PhD or doctorate | Yes |
| Research-based Master's, 9 months or longer | Yes |
| Government or scholarship-sponsored course over 6 months | Yes |
| Standard taught Master's (MA, MSc, MBA) | No |
Financial Requirements and Application Steps
- Studying in London: an extra 845 pounds a month for up to 9 months, about 7,605 pounds total.
- Studying outside London: an extra 680 pounds a month for up to 9 months, about 6,120 pounds total, held for 28 consecutive days.
- Get your CAS, apply for your own Student Visa first, then your spouse applies using your GWF or UAN reference number.
- Your spouse pays a visa fee of around 558 pounds plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of 1,035 pounds per year.
My Advice
If keeping your spouse with you is a priority, check whether your program qualifies as research-based before you accept your offer, since switching later is difficult. If your course is a standard taught Master's, plan around visitor visa trips instead, since your spouse cannot live in the UK long-term on that route.
