If I get a master's from New Zealand, how many points will I get for PR, and what are the PR requirements related to work experience in New Zealand?
With a master's degree from New Zealand, you earn 5 points toward Permanent Residency (PR) under the Skilled Migrant Category. You need a minimum of 6 points to be eligible for PR.
To gain the extra point:
- Work in a skilled job (ANZSCO skill level 1-3) in New Zealand
- Job must pay at or above the median wage
- Employment must be full-time (30+ hours/week) and either permanent, fixed-term (12+ months), or continuous contracts (6+ months)
- Each year of such skilled work in New Zealand adds 1 point
From August 2026, master's graduates will get 6 points for the qualification alone, but must have a job or offer paying at least three times the median wage.
You must also meet health, character, age, and other requirements. LeapScholar can guide you through the PR process and requirements.
