I have B1 level German but no Goethe certificate, and I've been admitted to a bachelor's in Artificial Intelligence starting winter 2026. Will my German student visa get rejected because I don't have the certificate?
Your visa risk depends on whether your AI bachelor's is German taught or English taught. German taught programs require a Goethe B2, TestDaF, or telc C1 certificate. English taught programs need no Goethe certificate at all, just IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 80 plus a Medium of Instruction letter.
Whether your German student visa gets rejected depends entirely on the language of instruction for your Artificial Intelligence bachelor's, not simply on the fact that you speak conversational B1 German. If your program is taught in German, your uncertified B1 claim will very likely be treated as insufficient proof and put your visa at risk. If your program is taught in English, your German level has no bearing on the decision and you do not need a Goethe certificate at all.
Which Language Proof You Actually Need
| Program Language | Proof You Must Submit | Risk if Missing |
|---|---|---|
| German taught | Goethe Zertifikat B2 or C1, TestDaF minimum TDN 4, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, or DSH 2/3, issued within the last two years | High risk of rejection for insufficient language proficiency |
| English taught | IELTS Academic 6.5 or higher, or TOEFL iBT 80 or higher, plus a Medium of Instruction letter from your previous school | Low risk once this proof is submitted |
Other 2026 Red Flags to Clear Before Your Interview
- Write your own Statement of Purpose in your own words; embassies are now strictly rejecting generic or AI generated motivation letters.
- Fund your blocked account to the full current requirement and transfer a small buffer of 100 to 200 euros to absorb intermediary bank fees.
- Secure your APS Certificate early if you are applying from India, since your visa cannot be processed without it.
My Advice
Pull out your admission letter today and confirm in writing what medium of instruction it lists. If it says English, walk into your interview with your IELTS or TOEFL scorecard and MoI letter and stop worrying about the Goethe certificate altogether; if it says German, book your TestDaF or Goethe exam now, since a informal B1 claim alone will not carry you through.
