How should I convert a foreign degree with only letter grades into a numeric GPA for German university applications?
To convert letter grades, assign sequential numbers to your grading scale from highest to lowest, then apply the Modified Bavarian Formula using your highest, lowest passing, and cumulative grade values. A final grade of B, for example, can convert to roughly 2.5 on the German 1.0 to 4.0 scale.
You can convert your letter grade transcript into a number the German system recognizes. In most cases though, uni assist or the university will actually redo this calculation officially using your original transcript.
The Conversion Steps
| Step | What You Do |
|---|---|
| 1. Map your scale | List every grade from highest to lowest, then number them |
| 2. Apply the formula | x = 1 + 3 times (Nmax minus N) over (Nmax minus Nmin) |
| 3. Use your cumulative grade | Convert your overall final grade, not individual courses |
Worked Example
- Scale: A+ is 1, A is 2, B is 3, C is 4, D is 5 lowest passing, F is 6 fail
- Cumulative grade of B equals N of 3, with Nmax of 1 and Nmin of 5
- Result: 1 plus 3 times 0.5 equals 2.5, a solid passing German grade
My Advice
Check the back of your own transcript first for an official grade explanation table, since if one exists you must use it instead of building your own scale. Never convert to a US 4.0 scale first, since applying the formula to that intermediate scale distorts your true standing.
