Write the SOP in your own voice, do not use AI tools, do not submit a template from a counsellor, and do not adapt an SOP written for a different program. Admissions committees at NUS and other Singapore universities read thousands of applications and can identify AI-generated or formulaic writing quickly. The SOP should span roughly two pages and be structured around a clear narrative: why you chose your engineering discipline, what specific experiences during your degree shaped your thinking about the direction you want to move in, what you have done beyond coursework that demonstrates initiative and leadership, and why the specific program and university is the right next step for your stated goals.

• The connection between your past and the program you are applying to should be logical and specific, mentioning specific courses, faculty, or research at NUS that connects to your interests is more compelling than a generic statement about the university's ranking or reputation.
• Avoid writing a statement that could apply to any program anywhere.
• The SOP that gets remembered by an admissions reader is the one that tells a specific, honest story about a specific person.
