How should an Indian quant finance applicant structure the SOP for a US master's program, should work experience or academics take priority?

The SOP for a US master's in quant finance or computational mathematics should cover all dimensions, academics, work experience, extracurricular involvement, and fit with the specific university, without deprioritising any of them. On work experience, the framing should be confident and cumulative: if you have multiple years across internships and full-time roles, present the total as a coherent professional trajectory rather than listing individual stints modestly. On academics, highlight the quantitative and technical coursework that is directly relevant to the program you are applying to.

• On the university specifically, name one or two professors whose research interests you, and be specific about why, referencing their actual work rather than their reputation, and mention clubs or research groups you plan to engage with.
• US admissions committees notice when a candidate chose the institution deliberately versus included it on a ranked list.
• The SOP should also clearly articulate career goals: what you want to do after the degree and why this program at this university is the specific step that gets you there.
• Underselling or being modest about your background, compared to other international applicants presenting themselves fully, is a strategic disadvantage in US applications.
