How much would I need to borrow for tuition and living expenses if I study at a private university in Germany, and what are the typical loan amounts Indian banks offer for studying abroad?

For a 2 year Master's at a private German university, budget roughly 43,000 to 68,000 euros total, tuition of 10,000 to 20,000 euros a year plus living costs; SBI's Scholar Loan scheme lists unsecured limits of 30 lakh to 50 lakh rupees for selected institutions, more with collateral.

Private German tuition changes your financing math entirely compared with the tuition free public route, and the loan scheme you should look at also changes, SBI's standard Student Loan Scheme tops out far lower than its Scholar or Global Ed-Vantage products, which matter here.

What a Private University Actually Costs

  • Tuition: roughly 10,000 to 20,000 euros a year at most private German universities.
  • Living expenses: roughly 10,000 to 12,000 euros a year, with DAAD citing 800 to 1,000 euros a month for some programmes.
  • Insurance, semester fees and books: roughly 1,000 to 2,000 euros a year.
  • Travel, visa and setup: roughly 1,000 to 2,000 euros, mostly upfront.

Across a full 2 year Master's, that lands most students around 43,000 to 68,000 euros total, or roughly 43 to 68 lakh rupees at a simple 1 to 100 conversion used purely for arithmetic ease, the actual figure depends on the exchange rate when your loan is sanctioned.

Which Indian Loan Products Actually Cover This

SBI's standard Student Loan Scheme currently lists up to 7.5 lakh rupees, far below what a private German programme needs. Its Scholar Loan scheme, for selected institutions, lists unsecured limits of 30 lakh to 50 lakh rupees, with larger need based amounts where collateral is provided, while Global Ed-Vantage is designed specifically for higher cost overseas education and can go considerably higher against security.

My Advice

Do not borrow the full estimated cost by default, split it into what family savings and any scholarship can cover first, then size the loan to the remaining gap, a 37 lakh rupee loan against a 50 lakh rupee programme is a very different repayment picture than borrowing the full amount. Check whether your specific private university, IU, SRH, Arden, GISMA or Constructor among others, is on your chosen bank's approved institution list before you apply.
