How many intakes are there in the UK for international students, and which intake is best?
The UK has three intakes: September (main), January (second), and May (limited). September offers the widest courses, most scholarships, and largest cohort - making it the right choice for most Indian students. January is a solid second option. May suits only select post-92 universities for Business and IT programs.
The UK has three intakes: September (main intake), January (second intake), and May (limited summer intake). September is the primary intake with the widest course range, the most scholarships, and the largest student cohort. January is a legitimate strategic second option. May is a niche window available only at select post-92 universities. For the vast majority of Indian students, September is the right choice.
Three UK Intakes at a Glance
Intake | When Classes Start | Application Window | Course Range | Scholarship Access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
September (Main) | September / October | October - June | Widest: all subjects, all levels | Most: Chevening, GREAT, University Awards |
January (Second) | January / February | July - October | Moderate: fewer programs than September | Limited but available at many universities |
May (Summer) | April / May / June | November - March | Narrow: mainly Business and IT | Very limited; almost no major scholarships |
Which Intake Is Best?
September: Best for most students. All Russell Group universities, the full subject catalog, and every major scholarship align with September. Apply between November and February for the best outcome.
January: The strategic second chance. If you missed September deadlines, need more time to improve your English score, or require additional time to strengthen your profile, January is a solid fallback. Course variety is lower, particularly at top-ranked universities.
May: A niche window. Suitable for Business, Management, or IT programs at post-92 institutions. Not suitable if you are targeting Russell Group degrees, named scholarships, or competitive programs in STEM, Law, or Finance.
My Advice
The most common question I get is: "Can I still apply for September?" The honest answer is yes - for most universities, applications are open until May or June for a September start. But here is what students consistently miss: scholarship deadlines close much earlier. Chevening closes in November, and GREAT scholarships close in January. If financial support is part of your plan, applying in April for September is already too late for funding. Apply between November and February for September intake if scholarships matter. For January intake, start your documents and applications by July or August.
