How many attempts are allowed for the DHA exam if I fail on the first try?
If you fail your first DHA attempt, you get two more retakes, so three attempts in total. These are shared across all UAE health authorities, and you must wait 45 days between tries. Fail all three and you face a 1 to 2 year lockout before any conditional fourth attempt.
If your first DHA attempt did not go to plan, take a breath, because it is very common not to clear it the first time and you have more chances. That said, the retake rules are strict and the attempts are tracked across the whole UAE, so it pays to understand exactly how they work.
Attempts and Retake Rules
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Total attempts | 3 standard attempts (your first plus two retakes) |
| Shared across authorities | Counted collectively across DHA, DOH or HAAD, and MOHAP |
| Waiting period | Minimum 45 days after a failed attempt before rebooking |
| Fees | Full Prometric exam fee applies to every reattempt |
If You Fail All Three Attempts
| Outcome | Detail |
|---|---|
| Lockout period | Generally a 1 to 2 year ban on rebooking, by profession guidelines |
| Conditional 4th attempt | Possible under PQR with a declaration, upgraded qualification, or lower title |
| Permanent disqualification | Failing the 4th attempt bars you from that healthcare post across the UAE |
My Advice
Because your attempts are finite and shared across every emirate, do not rush to rebook. Use the full 45-day window to work through your weak areas and sit timed mock tests until you are consistently scoring above the pass mark. Walking in prepared for your second attempt is far smarter than burning it on a quick retry.
