The GMC requirement is an overall IELTS score of at least 7.5, with no individual module (Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing) below 7.0. Other eligibility points include a recognised primary medical degree and a 12-month internship. Confirm the latest requirement on the official GMC page.

The strict GMC requirement is an overall IELTS score of at least 7.5, with no individual module falling below 7.0. IELTS is the preferred English test, though other acceptable tests may be allowed.

Other Eligibility Points for PLAB 1

  • A primary medical degree granted by a medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
  • An internship of at least 12 months, including 3 months in surgery and 3 months in medical practice.
  • No absenteeism of more than 20 days.
  • If you live in India, book PLAB 1 at an alternative centre such as New Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata, as the GMC will stop offering it in Chennai from February 2027 onward.

My Advice

Meeting these points makes you eligible to sit the exam, not to pass it. Check your English score validity and book early, then confirm everything on the official GMC page.
