How does the process work for a student once they arrive in Germany?
Once you arrive in Germany as a student, you must complete several important steps to ensure a smooth start:
- Register your residence within two weeks at the local registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt/Bürgeramt). Bring your passport, rental contract, and registration form.
- Apply for your residence permit at the local foreigners' office (Ausländerbehörde) using your passport, registration confirmation, university admission letter, proof of funds, health insurance, and biometric photos.
- Enroll at your university by submitting your admission letter, passport, proof of health insurance, and academic certificates.
- Set up health insurance if not already done - this is legally required for all students.
- Open a German bank account to manage your finances and access blocked account funds.
- Attend orientation and start classes as scheduled.
Starting these steps soon after arrival helps you meet legal requirements and settle into student life.
