How do I convert my Indian CGPA to the German grade scale?
Germany uses the Bavarian formula: Grade equals 1 plus 3 times (10 minus your CGPA) divided by (10 minus 4). Its scale runs 1.0 best to 4.0 pass, opposite to India. A 9.0 CGPA converts to about 1.5, rated Very Good, which is competitive at top universities.
German grades run the opposite way to India: 1.0 is the best and 4.0 is the minimum pass. To translate your CGPA, most universities use the Bavarian formula, so a strong Indian score becomes a low German number, which is exactly what you want.
The Bavarian Formula
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Formula | Grade = 1 + 3 x (10 - CGPA) / (10 - 4) |
| Best possible German grade | 1.0 |
| Minimum passing grade | 4.0 |
Sample CGPA Conversions
| Indian CGPA | German grade | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| 9.0 | ~1.5 | Very Good |
| 8.0 | ~2.0 | Good |
| 7.0 | ~2.5 | Good |
My Advice
Run your own CGPA through the Bavarian formula before you shortlist universities, so you know your real competitive band. If your converted grade is around 1.5, TU9 programmes are realistic; if it is closer to 2.5, weight your list toward strong mid-tier and applied-sciences options.
