From which intake is the dMAT mandatory for me as an Indian student applying to master's programmes in Germany?

The dMAT becomes mandatory from the Summer Semester 2027 intake onwards for eligible master's applicants. The dMAT introduction is intended for the Summer Semester 2027 intake and subsequent intakes, as the first dMAT certificates are available from 12 October 2026. It applies only to Engineering, Commerce, Economics and Management graduates.

The dMAT becomes compulsory for eligible master's applicants from the Summer Semester 2027 intake. The Winter Semester 2026/27 intake is fully exempt.

Which Intakes and Applicants Are Affected

Intake or groupdMAT status
Winter Semester 2026/27Not intended to require dMAT (introduction targets Summer Semester 2027 onwards)
Summer Semester 2027 onwardsMandatory for eligible master's applicants
Engineering bachelor's graduatesRequired for Summer Semester 2027 or later
Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Economics graduatesRequired for Summer Semester 2027 or later
Business or Management graduatesRequired for Summer Semester 2027 or later

Why Winter 2026/27 Is Exempt

Initial dMAT score reports only come out in October 2026, once university application deadlines have passed. That timing is why the winter intake is exempt.

My Advice

Check your bachelor's field first, because the dMAT applies only to certain degrees. If you are targeting Summer Semester 2027 or later, confirm the current rules on the official page.
