For studying in the UK, what exams do I have to take?
Your UK exam list depends on nationality and course. Non-native English speakers need IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE. Medicine and dentistry require UCAT, law schools often require LNAT, and math-heavy Oxbridge and Imperial courses may require MAT or STEP. Most master's degrees need no extra exam beyond English proof.
Your exam checklist for studying in the UK changes based on your nationality, your course, and your degree level, so there is no single nationwide test like the SAT. You will almost certainly need an English proficiency score, and a few competitive fields layer on subject-specific admissions tests.
UK Exams by Category
| Category | Exams You May Need | Who Needs Them |
|---|---|---|
| English proficiency | IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge CAE/CPE | Non-native English speakers or those schooled outside English medium |
| Medicine and dentistry | UCAT | Undergraduate medical and dental applicants |
| Law | LNAT | Top law schools including Oxford, UCL, KCL, LSE, Bristol |
| Math and computing | MAT or STEP | Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial math-heavy courses |
| Business master's/MBA | GMAT or GRE | Top business schools, often waived with strong work experience |
What Most Master's Applicants Actually Face
- Most taught master's programs rely on your transcripts, personal statement, and references, with no aptitude test required.
- Business, finance, and quantitative economics master's programs are the main exception where GMAT or GRE gets requested.
- A few universities will accept SAT or AP results as supporting evidence, but this is rarely mandatory.
My Advice
Check the entry requirements page for each specific course you are shortlisting, since a law or medicine degree at the same university can carry a completely different exam demand than an MSc in the department next door.
