Do we need to learn German language up to level B1 or B2 for study purposes?
It depends on your path. Most full degree programs taught in German require C1, though a few technical programs accept B2. A Studienkolleg foundation course typically requires B1 to apply but tests closer to B2, while degree programs taught in English usually require little to no German at all.
Your required level depends entirely on which academic path you take, so B1 or B2 alone rarely tells the full story. For a direct German-taught degree, B1 is generally too low, and B2 is usually just the bare minimum for select technical programs, with C1 being the real standard most universities expect from you.

If you plan to study a full degree in German, keep pushing past B2 all the way to C1 before you arrive, because following fast-paced lectures and writing academic papers at only B2 is exceptionally difficult.
