Do UK universities require IELTS scores for admission especially for Master's and PhD programs?

Yes, IELTS is required by most UK universities for Masters and PhD admissions. The standard entry score is 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Russell Group universities typically require 7.0 overall. The UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) additionally requires a minimum of 5.5 in each band for the student visa, separate from the university's own requirement. TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic are accepted as alternatives at many institutions.

English language proficiency is a mandatory requirement for postgraduate admission in the UK. Indian students whose undergraduate education was in English need to check whether their institution qualifies for an English language waiver - many UK universities accept degrees taught in English as proof of proficiency without a separate test. For others, IELTS Academic is the most widely accepted option.

My Advice

If your BCom, BBA, BTech, or BCA was taught entirely in English, apply to your target UK universities first and ask specifically whether they accept a medium of instruction certificate (also called a MOI certificate) as an English waiver. Many universities - including several Russell Group schools - do accept this for applicants from India. Your university's exam controller office can issue an MOI certificate on official letterhead typically within 1-2 weeks. If a test is required, IELTS Academic is safest - it is accepted everywhere, valid for 2 years, and results are available within 13 days. Aim for 7.0 if targeting any of the top 30 UK universities - it opens significantly more options than 6.5.
