Most UK universities charge no application fee for postgraduate programs, making the UK far cheaper to apply to than the US or Canada. UCAS charges £28.50 for up to five undergraduate choices. A small number of specialist schools and some MBA programs are exceptions to this rule.

Most UK universities do not charge direct application fees, making the UK far more affordable to apply to than the US or Canada. For undergraduate applications, UCAS charges a flat fee of £28.50 for up to five course choices. For postgraduate programs, nearly all UK universities accept direct applications through their portals at no charge. A small number of specialist schools and some MBA programs are exceptions.

My Advice

The UK is significantly cheaper to apply to than the US, where $75-$100 per school is standard. For most PG applicants, applying to five or six UK universities costs nothing beyond your English test fees. I always advise students to focus on quality over quantity: a strong, well-researched application to three well-chosen universities beats six rushed applications. For UG applicants using UCAS, think carefully about all five choices. Your insurance choice - the lower-offer backup you genuinely want to attend - matters as much as your first choice. Make sure it is a university you would be happy to attend, not just a safety you have no interest in.
