IELTS is not the only English test UK universities accept. Depending on the university and course, you may be able to submit TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or the Duolingo English Test. Acceptance and score requirements vary by institution, so confirm before booking.
IELTS is just one of several English tests that UK universities recognise. Depending on the university and course, you may be able to submit another recognised English proficiency test.
Alternatives to IELTS
| Test | Acceptance in the UK |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | Accepted by many UK universities, but score requirements and acceptance policies vary by institution |
| PTE Academic | Accepted by many UK universities and usable by eligible applicants who meet the required score |
| Duolingo English Test | Accepted by some UK universities and programmes, so confirm acceptance before taking the test |
How to Choose a Test
- Base your choice on the requirements of the universities and courses on your shortlist.
- Another programme may refuse a test that one university accepts.
- Compare the score requirements of each test before booking.
My Advice
Make a shortlist first, then check each course page for accepted tests. Pick the test that suits your strengths, and confirm acceptance in writing if the page is unclear.
