After completing my MBA and work experience visa, will I be able to stay in the US or UK, or do I need to return to India?
You do not have to return to India immediately after either country. In the US, you get 12 months of OPT, or 3 years if STEM designated, but staying longer needs a competitive H-1B win. The UK Graduate visa needs no sponsor upfront and leads to residency after 5 years.
Whether you can stay in the US or UK after your MBA, or need to return to India, depends on which country you studied in. Your outcome also hinges on how your post study work visa converts into long term sponsorship.
US vs UK: Your Post MBA Work Options
| Feature | United States | United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|
| Post study work period | 1 year OPT, or 3 years if your MBA is STEM designated | 2 years on the Graduate Route visa |
| Job requirement to get the visa | Must find a role related to your MBA; employer must accept F-1 students | None required upfront; you can search freely |
| Long term stay mechanism | H-1B lottery, or an L-1 intracompany transfer later | Skilled Worker visa with a licensed sponsor and salary threshold |
| Settlement outlook | Long green card backlog for Indian born applicants in EB-2 or EB-3 | Indefinite Leave to Remain after 5 continuous years |
Why the Paths Feel So Different
The US route hinges on winning the H-1B lottery before your OPT runs out, and some candidates instead work for a multinational's India office for a year and transfer back on an L-1 visa. The UK gives you an unconditional grace period to search for work, but you must still find a Skilled Worker sponsor before your Graduate visa expires.
My Advice
If you study in the US, apply to H-1B sponsoring employers well before your OPT ends and keep the L-1 transfer route in mind as a backup. If you study in the UK, start Skilled Worker job hunting in your first year, since you have no sponsorship pressure early on.
