After completing a dependent visa and short term course, can I convert to a post study work visa (PSW) in New Zealand?

No, completing a short-term course on a dependent visa in New Zealand usually does not make you eligible for a post-study work visa (PSW).

To qualify for a PSW, you generally need to complete a full-time qualification at NZQF Level 7 (Bachelor’s) or higher, or a listed eligible non-degree qualification at Level 4-7, studied for the required duration in New Zealand. Short-term courses that do not lead to a formal qualification typically do not meet these criteria.

New Zealand is introducing a Short-term Graduate Work Visa from 16 Nov 2026, allowing those who complete certain Level 5-7 qualifications (studied full-time for at least 24 weeks) to apply for a short-term work visa. This is subject to change.
