The full form of WWW is World Wide Web. The World Wide Web, usually known as the Web, is a database of all websites connected to the global Internet. It is an information system that allows users to access connected hypertext data and resources via the Internet. A user can access a web page and navigate between web pages using hyperlinks were photos, words, and other multimedia data and material can be carried on a website page using a web browser.

WWW uses three protocols, namely

1. Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
2. Hypertext markup language (HTML)
3. Uniform resource locator (URLs)

History of WWW

• The World Wide Web was created in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee and his colleagues at CERN, an international scientific organisation situated in Geneva, Switzerland. They developed the HTTP protocol to standardise server-client communication. Their text-based Web browser was released for general use in January 1992.
• The World Wide Web gained popularity swiftly after the creation of Mosaic, a web browser developed by Marc Andreessen and others at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois in the United States and debuted in September 1993.
• Andreessen co-founded Netscape Communications Corporation in April 1994, and Netscape Navigator quickly became the most powerful Web browser.
• Microsoft Corporation, the world’s largest software firm, launched its own Internet Explorer (IE) browser in 1995. When Internet Explorer was integrated into the Windows operating system in 1996, it quickly became a popular Web browser.
• Mozilla’s Firefox, which debuted in 2004, was the first true challenger to IE.
• Google Chrome was released in 2008. Chrome had become a powerful browser by 2013, when compared to IE and Firefox. Microsoft discontinued Internet Explorer in 2015, replacing it with Edge.
