The full form of USSD is Unstructured Supplementary Service Data. QuickCodes or feature codes are additional names for USSD. It is a networking protocol used by GSM (Global System for Mobile) mobile phones for calling or texting purposes to a mobile operator-hosted application. In a nutshell, it is a mechanism that GSM-based cell phones utilise to communicate with the network operator’s equipment.
USSD is a session-based specification that creates a live session between a mobile device and the network operator’s device. The sole difference between it and SMS is that, unlike SMS, a USSD transaction can only take place during a session between the parties involved. As long as the link is active, USSD allows for a two-way exchange of information.
