What is the full form of SIT?

The full form of SIT is Special Investigation Team. SIT is a special committee that has been constituted for any case where the incumbent investigative agency did not conduct the inquiry properly.

No statute or provision of the constitution specifies how a case should be presented before an SIT. This team is typically assigned to high-profile cases. First, the SIT is providing the Court of First Instance with its report. The Court’s board will then decide whether to accept or reject this document in its entirety.

Important Information

  • SIT is an acronym for Special Investigation Team, which is a trained unit of Indian law enforcement authorities made up of personnel authorised to look into major crimes.
  • When it becomes clear that the present agency is unable to undertake a thorough investigation in a certain situation or when a case is made against a high-profile person who might affect the investigation of the current agency, SIT is engaged.
  • When a case is brought before the court, and the court determines that the current agencies cannot resolve the issue due to various factors like corruption, bias, a lack of resources, ted-tape, etc., the court will employ a unit to look into the issue.

How does SIT function?

  • The Supreme Court of India or the local or state government appoints SIT members.
  • The team is looking into the situation and compiling a report for the court.
  • All levels of appeal review the report.
  • The report may be accepted or rejected by the Court.
  • The appeals jury will decide how the case will proceed if the recommendation is rejected or not accepted.
