What is the full form of RAM?

The full form of RAM is Random Access Memory. RAM was utilised to write to and read from the storage. RAM keeps track of the files and programs the CPU is using. It is a volatile memory because data is lost when the power is turned off. RAM can be broken into two kinds further.

  1. SRAM (Static RAM)
  2. DRAM (Dynamic RAM)

A Brief History of RAM

  • The first type of RAM was created in 1947 using the Williams tube.
  • Information was stored on the front of the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) in electrical charge dots.
  • After that, in 1947, magnetic-core memory became a second RAM type that was widely employed.
  • Frederick Viehe, who carried the bulk of the development effort, was listed as the owner of numerous patents.
  • Small metal rings with wires connecting to each ring have been utilised to deal with magnetic-core memory. Each of those rings holds one piece of data that has been kept and can be retrieved at any time.
  • However, Robert Dennard made the initial discovery of RAM—now known as solid-state memory—in 1968. Bits of information in DRAMs have been preserved using transistors.

Benefits of RAM

  • RAM has no mechanically moving parts. Hence no noise is produced.
  • Compared to a mechanical disc drive, RAM uses far less electricity. It increases battery life and reduces CO2 emissions.
  • The fastest storage media is thought to be RAM.

Limitations of RAM

  • Data loss may be irreversible if no power recovery system, such as a laptop battery, is in place.
  • Devices don’t typically incorporate a lot of RAM because it is costly per bit.
