With the scientist Vikram Sarabhai‘s immediate understanding of the need for space exploration, Jawaharlal Nehru created the Indian National Space Research Committee (INCOSPAR) in 1962 under the DAE (Atomic Energy Department). When DAE took over INCOSPAR’s development in 1969, ISRO was born. In 1972, the Indian government formed the Space Commission and the Space Department (DOS), which housed ISRO. While the founding of ISRO brought about space exploration efforts in India, it is overseen by the DOS and answers to the Prime Minister of India.
