GTT is also known as OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test), and it is usually performed during pregnancy to rule out gestational diabetes. The IGTT is another type of examination ( Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Test ). This is a unique procedure in which glucose is given intravenously for 2-3 minutes.

Procedure
GTT is a basic test that entails collecting blood prior to starting the procedure, which is known as fasting blood sugar. After fasting for 7-8 hours, a blood sample is obtained. Following the collection of the blood sample, the patient is instructed to take a specific amount of glucose in the form of a sugary drink ( usually 50-75 gms is given ). The patient is instructed not to eat or drink anything for two hours following the administration of glucose. After two hours, another blood sample is taken to determine the level of glucose in the blood.
During the IGTT, glucose is infused into the veins for three minutes. Blood insulin levels are measured by taking a blood sample before and 2-3 minutes after the injection. The IGTT method is never used to screen for diabetes; it is only used for research purposes.
