What is the full form of FORTRAN?

The full form of FORTRAN is FORmula TRANslation. A high-level programming language, FORTRAN, was first created in 1957 by John Backus. It is specifically suited to computational computing & scientific applications demanding intricate math calculations in numerical computing and was primarily designed to develop high-performance computing programming. The architecture’s main goal was to convert mathematical equations into computer code.

Some of this language’s key traits include the following:

  • Simple to understand and learn.
  • A programme can be transferred from one computer to another.
  • It offers numerous natural expressions for complex mathematical functions.
  • There is a 20% performance hit compared to assembly or machine code.
  • It gives programmers the ability to control storage allocation.
  • Programmers do not have to put down code in precisely specified columns as they would in assembly or machine language.

A Synopsis of FORTRAN’s Past

  • Before the creation of FORTRAN, programmers created complex and time-consuming programmes using machine or assembly code.
  • It resulted in the development of FORTRAN, a programming language that was simple to learn, computer-independent, convenient for mathematical formulas, and excellent for various apps.
  • The FORTRAN programming language allowed programmers to write programmes 500 per cent faster than the previous versions since testing was much more comfortable.
  • The two most well-known FORTRAN iterations are FORTRAN IV and FORTRAN 77.
  • FORTRAN IV had been a USASI standard in 1966, and FORTRAN 77 was approved by ANSI in 1978.
  • An updated ISO & ANSI FORTRAN standard was released in the early 1990s called FORTRAN 90 was developed.
