The full form of CPCB is Central Pollution Control Board. It was created as a statutory body in September 1974 in accordance with the Water Act 1974. Additionally, it was given authority and responsibility under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution Act, 1981). The Central Government designated chairman of the CPCB is in charge of it.
Technical support is provided by the CPCB to the Ministry of Environment & Forests. This organization’s main goals are to promote the cleanliness of rivers and wells in various States by avoiding, regulating, and decreasing water pollution and improving air quality to avoid, regulate, and reduce air pollution, in accordance with the Water Act of 1974 and the Air Act of 1981.

Components Tracked by the CPCB
In order to monitor and manage emissions from industries and other relevant sources in order to maintain air quality, it also runs the NAMP (National Air Quality Monitoring Programme). At ITO in New Delhi, the CPCB operates an automated junction control centre. It continuously monitors:
- RSPM
- CO (carbon monoxide)
- O3 (ozone)
- SO2 (sulphur dioxide)
- SPM (suspended particulate matter) and so on.
Duties of CPCB
- Guides the central government on matters pertaining to the prevention and management of water and air pollution.
- Create comprehensive programmes to prevent and manage water and air pollution.
- Organize the state board’s activities and resolve disputes therein
- People acting as guides are taking part in activities related to the prevention and management of water and air pollution.
- Organize public education efforts on the prevention, reduction, or management of water and air pollution.
- Gather, compile, and publish statistical and technical data on water and air quality management, as well as on air and water emissions.
- To begin processing and disposing of wastewater and industrial effluents, prepare guides, protocols, and instructions.
- Defines the standards for air quality and fulfils beneficial functions as directed by the Indian government.
