What is the full form of COBOL?

The full form of COBOL is Common Business Oriented Language. An English-compiled programming language designed for business applications is called COBOL. Since 2002, it has been object-oriented and procedural. Governments and businesses mostly employ COBOL in their financial, industrial, and administrative organisations. Mainframe computer applications, such as intensive task & transaction processing activities, frequently use COBOL.

Applications have been upgraded in current languages, replaced with software programmes, or changed to different formats due to their declining popularity and the retirement of skilled COBOL programmers. Currently, most COBOL programming is done to support existing applications. However, given the speed of mainframes, many large financial institutions were still creating new COBOL programmes in 2006.

Background of COBOL

  • The DOD (Department of Defence) swiftly adopted COBOL because it could run on computers from several manufacturers since they had to obtain equipment from various suppliers.
  • Since 1960, it has undergone several modifications and upgrades.
  • The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has developed several COBOL upgrades, including COBOL-68, COBOL-74, COBOL-85, and COBOL-2002.
  • As a result, the COBOL format is referred to as a legacy language and is no longer supported by contemporary hardware.
