What is the full form of CLAT?

The full form of CLAT is the Common Law Admission Test. For admission to 22 national law universities in India, candidates must pass the CLAT, a consolidated national-level government entrance exam. These results are also used for law admission at most privately funded and self-financed law schools in India. CLAT Postgraduate scores are used to fill company legal positions by Indian public sector organisations, including Coal India, ONGC, BHEL, the Indian Steel Authority, Oil India, and others. The test is administered in law schools after the 12th grade or Higher Secondary Examination for admission to integrated U.G. programmes. It is also administered in law schools after graduation for the LLM (Law for Master of Laws) degree.

  • Candidates must be Indian citizens to sit for the exam.
  • There are several seats available for foreigners. Thus, foreign nationals can approach the College directly if they want to enrol in any programme at partner law universities.
  • Senior Secondary School or Intermediate (12th) or its equivalent diploma from a recognised board with an overall mark of no less than 45% is required for upper-level courses. While the combined marks of applicants for S.C. and S.T. are greater than 40%.
  • There is no upper age limit for the exam.
  • B.L. or L.L.B. University degree or a comparable degree from a recognised university with an overall score of at least 55% is required for P.G. courses, whilst S.C. and S.T. candidates must have an overall score of 50%.
  • Participants in the test may also include applicants who have successfully completed the qualifying assessment on additional or subsequent attempts.

CLAT Exam pattern

This 120-minute law school admission exam is timed. There are 150 multiple-choice questions on the CLAT exam paper. There are five sections in the CLAT examination paper where candidates must respond to questions about subjects like

  • G.K.
  • Legal GK
  • Current affair
  • Elementary Mathematics is based on Numerical Ability.
  • Legal Aptitude
  • Syllogism
  • English including Comprehension
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Legal Reasoning

All the questions starting with CLAT 2020 will be focused on paragraphs. 5-6 questions will carry on from one paragraph. Overall, the score breakdown is shown below.

  • English – 30 marks
  • G.K. questions – 37 marks
  • Mathematics -15 marks
  • Logical Reasoning – 30 marks
  • Legal Aptitude – 38 marks

The marking system is for each correct answer, one mark is given to the candidates, and 0.25 marks are deducted from their total score for each wrong answer.
