The two security protocols and certification systems are WiFi Protected Access (WPA) and WiFi Protected Access II (WPA2). These security protocols were developed by the WiFi Alliance to safeguard wireless computer networks. The Alliance created these protocols because WEP, the previous standard, had serious problems.

WPA, also known as the IEEE 802.11i draught specification, became available in 2003. The WiFi Alliance developed it as a temporary solution before the more sophisticated and secure WPA2, which became available in 2004 and is frequently used as a shorthand for the whole IEEE 802.11i-2004 or IEEE 802.11i standard.
