The company was founded in 1850 and is one of the thirty components that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The company is mostly recognised for its services involving payment cards, credit cards, and traveller’s checks.
In the 1980s, AmEx invested in the brokerage industry by gradually acquiring what would later become Shearson Lehman Hutton and splitting it into Smith Barney Shearson & Lehman Brothers. However, neither the names Shearson nor Lehman was in use before 2008.
