What is the full form of SMTP?

The full form of SMTP is Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is a fundamental protocol for email transmission between two computers connected by a TCP/IP network. It is a component of the TCP/IP protocol application level, facilitating the simple network delivery of email messages to one or more recipients. As a result, it has been utilised whenever an email is sent to the receiver via an email client, such as Gmail or Outlook Express, using email servers.

Your email is moved between networks through SMTP using a process known as the store and forward. Transporting the mail to the appropriate device and email account works in concert with the MTA (Mail Transfer Agent).

MSA (Mail Submission Agent)

The server on which the MUA accepts mail and works with the MTA to send it is known as the MSA (Mail Submission Agent).

MTA (Mail transfer agent)

MTA (Mail transfer agent) gathers and distributes the local user’s incoming mail. There may be more than one MTP acting as a client to deliver the mail.

MDA (Mail Delivery Agent) 

It delivers the mail to the local recipient’s mailbox.

How does SMTP operate?

The three-step SMTP operation is concentrated on the server or client design.

  • The first stage entails sending an email server using SMTP from an email client, such as Outlook, Gmail, and others, to an email server.
  • The second step involves using SMTP to deliver an email server to the receiving email server.
  • In the third phase, the recipient server uses an email client to download incoming mail over IMAP and store it in the recipient’s inbox.
