What is the full form of BMI?

The full form of BMI is Body Mass Index. It is a measurement technique that divides people into four categories: obese, overweight, normal, and underweight. Your weight in kilogrammes to the square of your height in metres is what determines this ratio (meters). People with high BMIs are substantially heavier or have more body fat relative to their height.

The height of a person in metres and his weight in kilogrammes are the two factors that must be considered while calculating BMI. If a person’s height is stated in inches, their weight should be reported in pounds. The formula for estimating BMI is as follows:

BMI = Weight (in pounds)/Height (In inches)2 ✕ 703

703 is a conversion factor.

If the person’s height and weight are given in meters and kilograms, then BMI can be calculated using the formula given below.

BMI = Weight (kg)/Height (m)2

The value of BMI

  • The BMI was created in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet. The Quetelet index is another name for it.
  • The chance of developing chronic illnesses like high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, gallstones, and more is estimated based on your BMI.
  • A person with a lot of muscle mass might also have a high BMI without any health risks.

  • If the value of BMI is between 25 to 29.9, then the person falls under the overweight category.
  • If the value of BMI is between 30 to 34.9, then the person falls under the obesity category.
