The full form of FAX is Facsimile. It is the telephone transmission of a scanned copy of printed-on-paper images and text between two individuals through a phone connection. A fax device is a computer that transmits original electronic documents or copies of scanned documents over the telephone network.

The fax machine creates text or image content as a single fixed visual image, transforms it into a bitmap, and then sends it via the phone network to the audio frequency tone framework. The fax machine interprets the tones received, reconstructs the image, and makes a paper copy.

  • Alexander Bain created fax technology in 1842. He was the first to discover that he could send pictures and messages over the telephone.
  • Later, Frederick Bakewell enhanced Bain’s creation and created the first image telegraph, similar to the fax machine.

Principle of FAX operation

  • The FAX machine is a full-featured printer and scanner combo.
  • The scanner initially examines the page, which converts it into a fixed graphic image, bitmaps it, and sends it over the phone line.
  • The paper must be inserted into the fax machine if someone wants to send a file over it.
  • The device will then process the copy of the file, turn it into a fixed graphic image, and transfer that to the receiving end through a phone connection.
