What is the full form of BMD?

The full form of BMD is Bone Mineral Density. It leads to an X-ray exam to measure density, such as mineral density in your bones. It displays how many grammes (g) of calcium and other minerals are packaged per unit volume of your bone. This test determines the strength and health of your bones. Typically, the test is performed on persons who are at risk of mild to severe bone loss.

Method of performing BMD

It is a painless, non-invasive procedure that does not require a prescription. It involves low radiation exposure and requires you to lie on a table or bench throughout the test. There appear to be two types of bone density scans.

Central DXA

In this type of scan, the torso’s hip, spine, or other bones are scanned by an X-ray machine.

Peripheral DXA

In this type of scan, the forearm, finger, wrist, or heel bones are scanned by an X-ray machine.

Why is the BMD examination carried out?

The BMD test is performed to identify the

• Loss of bone density before you have a bone fracture.
• Diagnosis of Osteoporosis (Severe bone loss).
• The control of osteoporosis treatment.

When does the doctor suggest the BMD test?

A doctor may order the BMD test as a preventive bone density clinical diagnostic if the following conditions are met:

• An X-ray demonstrating bone loss in the spine.
• Back pain in your spine, possibly due to a fracture or bone loss
• In one year, the height drops by half or more inches.
• Long-term steroid use, which can lead to bone density loss
• Anti-rejection medicines can alter the bone-rebuilding process after an organ or bone marrow transplant.
• Females over the age of 50 who are postmenopausal.
• Women above the age of 65 are more vulnerable to injury.
