The full form of NDRF is National Disaster Response Force. As the name implies, it is a specialised force established under Section 44 of the Disaster Management Act of 2005 to provide a swift and specialised reaction to a natural or man-made catastrophe such as an earthquake, flood, or landslide.
It currently consists of 12 battalions, each of which has 1149 people. These battalions are stationed in various Indian states. The NDRF personnel is trained and ready to respond to catastrophic events. The Indian Prime Minister serves as the NDMA’s Chairman. The Director-General of the NDRF is an IPS officer on deputation. With 45 staff and 18 self-contained professional search personnel, each battalion is eligible to supply rescue teams such as engineers, technicians, electricians, dog squads, and medical / paramedics. Structure of NDRF
- The Prime Minister of India serves as the NDMA’s chairman.
- The Director-General is appointed by the head of the NDRF, who is an IPS officer on deputation.
- The NDRF currently consists of 12 battalions, each with 1149 soldiers.
- It is staffed by three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), three Border Security Force (BSF), two Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), two Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and two Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) from the Paramilitary Force of India.
