The full form of SGOT is Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase. It is also known as AST, which stands for aminotransferase aspartate. It is an enzyme found in tissues other than bones, such as the liver, heart, kidneys, skeletal muscles, and other tissues. The SGOT enzyme is produced by your liver. Other organs, such as your kidney, heart, brain, and muscles, produce smaller amounts as well.
SGOT levels in a healthy man’s blood are low. The normal blood SGOt level is between 5 and 40 units per litre of serum. When the heart, liver, kidneys, or other tissues are damaged, SGOT or AST are released into the blood. A high AST level indicates liver damage, but it could also indicate damage to another organ, such as your kidney or heart, which causes it. This is why doctors perform AST tests alongside other liver enzyme tests.
