The full form of BOC is Bank of Ceylon. State-owned BOC is the largest commercial bank in Sri Lanka. The famous cylinder-shaped BOC headquarters are located in Colombo, the island’s hub of politics and commerce. The bank operates a global network of 628 subsidiaries, 689 ATMs, 23 CDM networks, and 15 regional credit centres.

In response to its local presence, the bank has three branches in Chennai, Malé, and Seychelles, as well as a division in London, from its headquarters in Colombo.

  • BOC was founded in 1939, and Sir Ernest de Silva served as its first chairman.
  • Back then, Ceylon was a British colony, and Sir Andrew Caldecott, the governor, officially opened the bank on August 1.
  • The British government established the banking arm for its government-focused businesses. In 1941, two years later, saw BOC began to spread outside of Colombo.
  • In Kandy, the first branch was officially opened. Later, BOC added divisions in important cities like Jaffna, Galle, Kurunegala, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Panadura, and Badulla.
