- Primary schooling refers to the first five years of the educational system.
- The following five years are secondary schooling, from sixth to tenth grade.

The SSLC certificate was utilised as the primary documentation for the date of birth when registration of death and births was not compulsory in India. For those born before 1989, a 10th-grade report card is accepted as proof of date of birth.
